The Pros and Cons of CBD Oil for Pets

In this article we discuss CBD Oil For Pets, and the potential it has to positively impact your dog or cats health.

CBD oil is a term that is no longer strange on our ears. You’ve probably heard it if you know someone who encounters day to day stresses, or you might have heard of it when Kim Kardashian had a baby shower that included CBD and meditation.

What about CBD oil for pets? The CBD industry has been growing significantly when it comes to pets, as pet owners spent around $31 million in 2019 on CBD for their dogs or cats. Despite its growing trend, is CBD oil safe for pets? Reliefly takes pride in educating you on your dog or cats possible benefits from having CBD in their life

What is CBD Oil?

Before we delve deeper into the benefits of CBD oil for pets, we need to know what CBD oil is. CBD oil contains CBD, another name for Cannabidiol. It is a compound found in the cannabis Sativa plant, to be specific marijuana and hemp. Hemp contains little amount of THC, while marijuana contains a significant amount of THC and CBD.

CBD is preferred over THC due to its benefits that do not give the “high effects” THC gives. According to research, CBD is a part of Endocannabinoid System that is connected to many functions of the body, such as:

  • Sleep cycle
  • Motor control
  • Metabolism
  • Appetite
  • Inflammation
  • Skin function

The parts mentioned above are only some parts of the functions connected to the Endocannabinoid System. Besides being connected in most aspects of our body, Endocannabinoid System is also important to maintain the body’s homeostasis – or stable mode – thanks to the system’s three properties (endocannabinoids, enzymes, and receptors). Without homeostasis mode, it is impossible to have a middle ground in our body.

Since the Endocannabinoid System is connected to many functions of the body and is pivotal for homeostasis mode, we need to take care of it by regularly maintaining its endocannabinoid’s.

CBD for Pets

Pets are also mammals like us, so they have an Endocannabinoid System in their bodies. Since pets have similar bodies to us, there is a possibility of CBD working for them. Let’s check out the potential benefits CBD can give our pets!

Pros of CBD for Pets

1. CBD can reduce the feeling of pain

Ethan Russo research shows that CBD may have an impact on the pets’ inflammatory system. Russo claimed that CBD can reduce the feeling of pain since it can reverse the inflammation system’s response. Please make an educated decision if CBD is right for your pet given the research shown above. If you have any questions please consult with your local veterinarian.

2. Can CBD reduce your pets’ anxiety?

Pets are no different from humans. They can be hungry, feel pain, exercise, and much more. Believe it or not, pets can also feel anxious and stressed just like us. Each pet expresses their anxiousness differently, but attentive pet owners can see it when their pets are stressed.

Since pets are mammals just like us, including the aspect of the Endocannabinoid System, they can lessen their day to day stresses by consuming CBD. Though CBD is not the permanent solution to anxiety and stress, at least we can lessen our pets’ burden for a moment.

3. Can CBD reduce symptoms of nausea and seizures?

Just like their feelings, pets can also have similar symptoms with us, humans. Some of the similar symptoms are nausea and seizure. CBD research from Ethan Russohas shown great results. Again, please make an educated decision if CBD is right for your pet given the research shown above.

It should be noted that CBD will not solve the main problem. Although the symptoms may be reduced, you still need to bring your pet to the veterinarian to diagnose the real cause of the symptoms. You can also ask the veterinarian if it is okay to use CBD to combat the symptoms while doing the medication given by the clinic.

4. Can CBD help with IVDD?

IVDD is the degeneration of the intervertebral discs in the spine.  There aren’t any known cures to put a halt to this degeneration, but studies show that CBD may help slow it down to create a better quality of life for your dog.  One study showed promising result of the benefits of cbd for dogs & cats with IVDD.

Cons of CBD for Pets

So far, there is no conclusive evidence of the disadvantages of CBD for pets. However, the American Veterinary Medical Association said it is important for pet owners to take precautions when it comes to giving pets CBD.

1. Dry mouth

CBD can result to dry mouth because it reduces saliva. Your pet might need some water after consuming CBD.

2. Lower blood pressure

Some patients’ blood pressure may drop after taking CBD, and the same goes for pets.. Of course, you must not give your pet CBD if he/she already has low blood pressure.

3. Feeling drowsy

CBD does give a calming effect, but the effect might also lead to drowsiness. Don’t be surprised if your pet sleeps after taking CBD!

Of course, CBD is still a better choice than THC since THC is more intense than CBD. However, you still need to be careful with the CBD’s dosage. Don’t give them too much, or else they may experience a lot of sleep.

Is CBD Oil Safe for Pets?

CBD oil is one of the safer options to give to your pets. If you use CBD oil for a pet, you can carefully maintain a proper dosage drop by drop. You can also mix the oil with their water and food. When you give CBD oil for a pet, make sure the oil is designed specifically for pets. If your pet doesn’t show side effects such as vomiting, you can increase the dosage after a week. Don’t forget to track the dosage and the time when you give CBD to your pet in case you need them in the future.

If you have any questions please consult with a  professional veterinarian. They can give you the best advice so that you will know what you must and must not do when it comes to giving CBD oil for pets.
